Friday Frustrations

For those gays out there who put so much stock in the Obamassiah, read this:

Obama won’t “repeal 'Don’t Ask Don’t Tell' on his own” and he “prefers a legislative solution” to the Federal ban on recognizing gay marriage. So basically he wants gay votes and gay ca$h, but he wants to take the centrist route and not really do shit for us. Obama talks about change... more like we're getting shortchanged!

And on it other news today that makes me want to emigrate – another sign that America’s day is swiftly approaching twilight... Now nobody even listens to our courts anymore.

Supreme Court’s Global Influence is Waning

"The story is similar around the globe, legal experts say, particularly in cases involving human rights. These days, foreign courts in developed democracies often cite the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights in cases concerning equality, liberty and prohibitions against cruel treatment, said Harold Hongju Koh, the dean of the Yale Law School. In those areas, Dean Koh said, “they tend not to look to the rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Why I Love Asian Markets

So this weekend past, Sean and I hit up the Asian markets in Fairfax - one of my particular favorites is Lotte on Fairfax Circle. It's the size of a Safeway, and it's always so much fun to see all the things you have no idea how to use (or would really want to?). Who knew aloe (yes, the sunburn treatment) was a popular beverage flavor in China, or that acorn jelly is a delicious Korean treat?

Anyway, I've always loved Asian markets for their cheap and unique produce. From giant king oyster mushrooms to banana flowers to huge clumps of fresh herbs for a dollar-a-piece, they can be a culinary wonderland. And this weekend was no exception, where I wound up buying tons of stuff that I'm still trying to figure out what all to do with.

I got a bunch of in-season Fuyu persimmons and I'd never used them before. And in making the puree (see below) I got to use my new Cuisinart food processor (it's the little things in life...) So here's a good recipe... because you never really know what to expect on my blog!

Persimmon Cookies
2 ripe persimmons, pureed
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 cup raisins (I prefer to leave out)
1 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 F. Dissolve baking soda in persimmon pulp and set aside. Sift flour, spices and salt together, set aside. Cream together butter or margarine and sugar until fluffy, beat in egg and persimmon. Stir in dry ingredients. Stir in nuts and/or raisins. Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes.

Season of the Witches

I've been trying, as of late, to put more of an effort into the blog. I've been inspired by the other two witches' blogs, so I'm making an effort to have more in-depth postings. Though don't worry; there will always be plenty of celebrity gossip, fluff, and gratuitous hot men.

Autumn is almost here, and it's my favorite time of year. I love Halloween - it's my favorite holiday (aside from my birthday, of course). But there's always been something I love about the fall. I'm planning on putting together another wine trip to the vineyards and mountains, if people are interested. It's always fun to have good friends and wine! October is also a major birthday month - Sean, and the "water witch," among others. And what will I be this year for Halloween??

Oh, in music news, it looks like they let Beyonce's little sister, Solange, out of the basement:

Separated at Birth: Cindy and Joan

One of these pictures is of potential First Lady, Cindy McCain. The other is chemical-face-peel-disaster Joan Van Ark. Take a guess!

DILF Wednesdays: It's Time to Crash a Wedding

Why didn't someone tell me about this while there was still time to pull a Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate and stop this travesty, I mean "wedding," from happening!

My crush in the UK, the British equivalent of my Anderson Cooper obsession, former London chief of police Brian Paddick got married. He eloped to Norway with some nobody and to rub it in my face, wrote about it!
Is that how you do me, Brian? I have to find out about these lies in The Daily Mail of all places! Fine, I see how it is, next time you see me in London I'll be holding hands with that Vladimir guy.

The Restless Cacophany

I've sucked yet another friends into the addictive world of blogging! Check out my friend K's new blog, The Restless Cacaphany.

“Does it Show on My Face, I’m Sick of This Place"

Sometimes I feel like I’ve been in this area for too long. I think one of the key things that keep me here are friends and the sense of safety and familiarity. Of course, sometimes I wonder how much longer I will live here, and where would I go from here. For instance, it’s one of my goals to live abroad, even if it’s only for a short time period – though increasingly I feel the U.S. has little to offer me. And yet, here I am close to my friends and family and there’s something to be said for that, too.

I guess I was thinking about this, oddly enough, when I finished reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which I picked up with a ton of other books from a used bookstore on 22nd St. I had seen the movie ages ago, and as is almost always the case, the book is far more interesting than the movie. My mother is in love with the city of Savannah, where the novel takes place, and she always talks about retiring there one day. I briefly remember visiting there as a child, but I remember my mom recalling stories old graveyards, taverns frequented by pirates, haunted houses, and a local form of Voodoo that is very prevalent. So I picked up the book hoping to see what it was about the city that fascinates so many people. It does, truly, sound like an intriguing place.

But the style of writing made me think about my own life here in an equally strange city (albeit for different reasons); Washington. I really think over the last 9 years I have enough material to write at least one novel, of not more. I’ve had some friends encourage me to do so in the past, but my problem always seems that I wouldn’t know where to start. So much has happened, and over the years I’ve befriended so many intriguing people; (formerly) homeless people, recovering drug addicts (and some sadly who never did), prostitutes, a drag queen, a comedian, a philosophy professor, alcoholics, shop owners, a singer, strippers, a Vietnamese transsexual, politicians, a murderer (remind me to tell you that story!), a painter, “power gays,” and so many others... So many characters and so many stories. And that, maybe, is a key to why I’ve stayed here as long as I have…

Greetings from Nigeria!

This is some of the funniest shiz I've heard in a long time. Now, you've all seen what's called the Nigerian Scam - you know, those junk emails that are from some dying person, usually in an African country, and they want to send you money before they die, but you have to send them some first, or supply your bank info etc.

So on NPR (I haven't found the link to the story yet) they interviewed this guy who turned the tables on one unsuspecting scammer. Little by little he won the con-artist's confidence over via email and phone, and tricked him into going along with a scheme. Basically he had the guy fly to war-torn Chad wearing a pink sash and was told to hold a sign at baggage claim (that unbeknownst to him insulted Islam). The guy got attacked by a mob, wound up sleeping in the desert and begging for money. There's a whole website of pranks pulled on these scammers, usually featuring them in embarrassing poses due to their poor English:

Only someone with my sick sense of humor would find that funny. By the way, I am living in Nigeria and am on my deathbed... I would love to leave my fortune to you but first I need your bank account numbers... ; )

The Juno from Juneau

Whilst away, I really tried actively to avoid anything remotely politics-related, but I was itching to comment on the whole Palin's daughter knocked up thing. It's old news now, I'm sure, but I was thinking the whole thing is so typical of how most of the time the Democrats just don't have the balls to call people out on their shit. Let's face it; if it was Obama or Biden's daughter who was pregnant, the right would be all over it, shaking their heads about America's supposed "moral decay" and so forth. Now we have the very daughter of one of these "abstinence-only" anti-choice foolios who's pregnant at 17, and the Republicans have spun the story such the Dems can't (or rather, won't) call them out on their hypocrisy.

Now, that having been said, here is the photo of the young man, Levi Johnston, who got Palin's daughter pregnant. I was also thinking, god it's a good thing I wasn't born female, because you know I would have gotten knocked up by some douchey jock too! I'd totally have his babies:

I'm just sayin!

hAApy hour is back, too

It looks like Halo learned their lesson! The 2-for-1 happy hour is back everyday like it used to be, according to an ad in the Blade this weekend. I'm sure certain complaints were finally heard!

I'm baack

Well I am home, and feeling that down feeling that always comes from returning to "reality" and coming back to the States - which generally depresses me anyway. I had a wonderful, wonderful time though. Puerto Rico is amazing island, full of the kind of beauty you have to pinch yourself because it doesn't seem real. Beaches with clear-blue water, rain forests and jungle waterfalls, banana and sugar plantations, and 500 years of Spanish history. Overall I think it's a place worth seeing.

I don't have all of the pictures up yet, but you can see the ones I do have by clicking here.

I think I've had my fill of plantains for awhile - they do love cooking with bananas. Yummy stuff! (see: Mofongo) And a word of warning - Puerto Ricans, no offense, are the bat-shit craziest drivers I've ever dealt with. Red lights and traffic lanes are only a suggestion there, it seems. And street paving is a concept that hasn't entirely caught on, nor has drainage. It rained one day (one day wasn't too bad - the island missed the hurricanes fortunately!) and I discovered that 1-2 foot deep "puddles" are not uncommon. LOL. I'm not looking forward to going back to work, but I feel overall very recharged which is what I needed.

My friend P is in England right now, but I love what the Blue Dog's been writing while I was away. Preach the truth!

Away Message, Bitch!

Daddy needs a rest... so me and my man are off to Puerto Rico until mid-September and I won't have time to update The Poison Pen like I usually do. In the meantime, check out The Blue Dog Speaks and Hortencia Carter's Big Mouth. I'm sure I'll have lots of gossip to report and catch up on when I get home!

I will leave you with some Britney to get you through the tough weeks without me...

Is Bad Publicity Really Better Than None??

One more reason to diss a certain bar I can't stand! Love the bad publicity haha!

From today's Letters in The Washington Blade...

J.R.’s should honor non-U.S. forms of ID
To the Editors:

I am an American living in Canada, and I recently visited Washington, D.C. for a conference. Much to my surprise, one of the city’s venerable gay bars — JR.’s — discriminated against me, denying me entry simply because I don’t live in the United States.

When friends and I went to enter the bar on Saturday, Aug. 24, the employee at the door asked to check my ID. I chuckled, actually, since I certainly don’t look like I am under 21, but it wasn’t a big deal — that is, until the employee told me JR.’s would not accept my driver’s license, issued by the Canadian province of Ontario, as a valid form of identification.

At first I thought he was joking, but he was serious. He told me that JR.’s only accepts U.S. driver’s licenses. He asked if I had my passport on me, but who carries around their passport when they are barhopping?

The employee at JR.’s told me that this was the law in D.C. But that didn’t ring true to me since every other bar I went to didn’t have a problem accepting my Ontario license. But if this is indeed the law, it doesn’t make sense in a world-class city that certainly has its share of international tourists.

In the end, JR.’s was the big loser since my friends (who have U.S. licenses) and I spent our drinking money at the city’s other gay bars. But still, this policy — whether in force by the city or JR.’s itself — is more xenophobic than sensible.

FRED KUHR
Toronto, Canada

-You know. First - I bet the door guy couldn't even find Ontario on a map. "No honey, that's Malaysia!"
Second, this is so illustrative of what's fucked up about American culture. I've been to about 17 countries and I've NEVER had to show an ID to get into a place to have fun or god forbid drink... except the U.S. I'm so tired of this place sometimes.

Boys of Summer

I had a great weekend - I watched Margo & Fred's pets Friday and Saturday while they were in NYC, and Saturday night we went out with Sean's friends to Halo and tres tragique JR's but we still had fun. Halo's remodeled upstairs looks REALLY nice, I recommend going to see it. It's like a conversation I was having with one of Sean's friends is that DC really needs more classy options like Halo for drinking - but I've covered that topic oh so many times..

Sunday we managed to get up moderately early and go to Rehoboth Beach for the day. We both had a great time, except the water seemed unseasonably cold. Oh well, we'll be in the Caribbean soon and won't have to worry about that. Did the boardwalk thing and had dinner and a gay bar/restaurant called Aqua Grille. The shirtless waiters in sailor outfits was a nice touch! oh, the food was good too. On the way home we stopped at my namesake, the famous Adam's Fruit Market. Indeed, that should be the name of my life.

It's Just Too Easy

I regret I haven't been posting much in honor of the Olympics that are going on in Beijing right now. Today walking to work I saw the following headline:
"Can Michael Phelps be Topped?"

Oh, do I even have to go there with the sexual puns? Sigh - here's a pic of Michael's stomach, just because.

DILF Wednesdays

Ok, I realize I am late with this - I'm slackin' and forgot my McDreamy/Silver Fox Wednesday special feature. So I'm making up for it by starting an all-inclusive "DILF Wednesdays."

What's a DILF you ask? Well click here to find out. So basically you a) have to be a man, b) preferably be older than me - use your judgment on that one, and c) be hot.

Today's DILF is Patrick Dempsey again, AKA McDreamy. I told you I'd bring him back from time to time.

Sex & the Suburbs

It’s Restaurant Week, in case you haven’t been out eating this week. Restaurant Week tends to be hit or miss – some restaurants really do a spectacular job and others you get the impression they just don’t really care. Sake Club, in Woodley Park, really did a very nice job, and I can’t wait to go back on a regular night. Sean and I ate there Monday night and I think it’s the best sushi I’ve had in the area. A bit pricey normally, but worth it. And they had a very extensive sake menu.

I had a happy hour with friends at The Fox and Hound after work last night – I forgot how when you order, say, a rum and coke there, they give you a glass of rum on ice…with a coke on the side. It’s one of the douchiest places on 17th (next to JRs anyway) but I had fun anyway. I met Margo afterward for tea at Soho. It’s funny to think, for years I went here everyday. Margo, me and others went there without fail every night for a long time. I think the smoking ban changed the place forever, though you can still smell the lingering smoke – I don’t think that will ever air out!

This is sort of a random topic but a conversation last night got me to thinking about living situations. Sean has mentioned a few times the idea of us living together. It’ll be 2, count ‘em 2, years together this fall. Sometimes I think he slips a mention of living together in conversations just to see if I’m paying attention!
So far, I’ve been pretty adept at avoiding the topic: “Live together? Oh look at the bird behind you! What nice weather we’re having!” But I don’t think it’s a topic that’s going to go away as we continue seeing each other.
Up until now I thought the short driving distance between us was kind of a positive thing; he had his life and I had mine and we saw each other when we wanted to. I’m a pretty independent person and the idea of living with someone again kinda scares me, though if I could get along with anyone I’m sure it would be Sean, it would just take some adjusting on both sides. My friends know they don’t have to worry about losing me yet – I don’t see us adopting and taking my kids to soccer practice just yet! Though maybe nesting-phobia does have a little to do with it. If we start going antique-shopping on the weekends, then my friends can worry…

The Lohans vs. My Husband

Hmmm what have I done this weekend? Well I sunned by the pool, until Sean left work early on Saturday, and we had dinner and drinks. Sunday we were going to have brunch with my friends Kim but I got up too late. I got a new suitcase at Nordstrom - my old one has been to 3 continents and is beat to hell, so it was time to get a new one; I also got a driving map of Puerto Rico, as I have rented a Jeep so Sean and I can drive around the island. We also went to my favorite Greek place, Cava for dinner and as usual I ate too much.

Hat tip to Margo for the video where Anderson Cooper, rightly so, criticizes Dina Lohan for the way she exploits/"raises" her daughters. Well, apparently both Dina and Lindsay's father Michael have shot back at Anderson, telling him basically to be quiet... Oh no they did not just go there! That's my husband you're talking about. What the Lohans need to do is back up off my man! Hold my earrings!
[side note - I have never met a woman named Dina who was normal - every Dina I've ever met is crazy. Why is that?]

Oh and does anyone remember THIS gem, where Anderson goes to a leather bondage store? So does he still claim he doesn't want to talk about his sexuality? Hmmm hmmmm.... please. Leather daddy!

Bye Bye Buca

This is for Phillip: What will become now of the giant meatball?

I get things like this from Sean, being a chef, is in the know on all these food-related news. For instance, who knew that last year there "was an heirloom tomato craze" in the culinary world?

Silver Fox Wednesdays

Ok, Margo, I will bring back McDreamy soon - but in the meantime today's silver fox is Brian Paddick. Openly gay former chief of London police.
Did I mention last time I was in London I robbed a bank? No, wait, three banks. And I stole the crown jewels too. I think I need to be interrogated and searched, Brian...

Why So Serious?

Saturday I spent at my building’s pool trying to get more sun. I try to be nice with my neighbors – I have some I really like, but there’s a lot of douchey people I live around that I don’t even bother saying ‘hi’ to. Nevertheless I sunned until a freak rainstorm hit. I met Sean for dinner and we went out for drinks…

More “Ex and the City” Menage-a-trois edition:

So we were out at Windows (aka Widows) for karaoke and ran into a pretty inebriated ex who shall remain nameless (no, it wasn’t Drunky). So he comes over and hangs out with Sean and I, and starts getting touchy-feely with me - and I can see Sean’s patience with the situation quickly filling up. Then ex starts joking “Hey, remember that time Adam got so drunk at Cobalt he started making out with me instead of you!” Awkward…Then, after serenading us with Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings,” said ex starts getting touchy-feely with Sean and me both. He even tried kissing Sean on the lips. What’s that saying, two’s company; three’s a crowd. We left pretty quickly. As in Sean and I, not with the ex. Looking back, I owe Sean big-time – he kept his cool when I would’ve tossed someone out the damn window. The center of attention – even when we’re up against the wall!

So last night Sean and I went joined Margo, Fred and Marc to see The Dark Knight, the new Batman movie. I really liked it! I think Heath Ledger’s Joker stole the show – he’s really the most interesting and complex villain I’ve seen in a long time. You actually find yourself rooting for him instead of Batman. The nurse scene was my favorite – I won’t spoil it but while I’m not huge on summer action movies, I do recommend this one. It’s a bit darker and noir than the other Batman movies and underscores what a loss it was when Ledger died.

McDreamy Silver Fox Wednesdays

Ok, so I couldn't find a new decent picture of "McDreamy" Patrick Dempsey so I am going to rename my Wednesday special as "Silver Fox Wednesdays." And of course today's selection is my husband, Anderson. Stare into his steel blue eyes...you can't look away!

Let Me Break the Ice…

Britney vs. Beyonce night at Town was a lot of fun – of course Britney won (as if there was any contest with P around, making sure she won). My plans of lying by the pool the next day were put on hold because it was just too damn hot – so instead I bought some books and joined Sean for sushi once he got off work.

Sean had to go deal with the remodel of his restaurant that’s been a recurring hassle lately, so I joined P and F at Annie’s…mere moments, I hear, after a certain someone had left. Oh pity. There was a big thunderstorm – love storms!, we went shopping, and then I went to Margo’s for a party she was throwing for an adorable 4-year old who’s staying with her. The Little Mermaid was the theme of her party – great minds think alike! Hell, I’m 27 and that was a theme at my party back in April. Stop laughing at me!

Tanorexia

So I need helpful hints: what is the best place in the DC metro region for tanning? I mean as in real tanning beds. I know, I know, cancer risk blah blah but a few death rays are a small price to pay for bronzed skin. And I’m not doing that spray-tan stuff because I’ve heard too many horror stories and seen too many tragic mishaps of orange skin; I’ll take my chances on the UV rays. I feel too pale – I try to get sun when I can but that usually winds up being my face, arms, and feet. In Mexico last year I was embarrassed by my pallor in comparison to the other guys on the beach. Granted some of them were Corinthian-leather-brown, but still I’m like to look healthy before hitting the beach. It’s ironic, tanning before the beach. Like those gyms where everyone is already buff so you feel like you need to work out before you work out. Discuss!

Girlfriends

It was fabulous having a reuniting with the other two "witches" last night. Of course there was a massive storm to accompany our cocktails at Halo. And extra thanks to F for pretending to be my boyfriend to get that Australian skank off me. They're all convicts, you know.

Topic of the Day

Going up to "the Hill" this afternoon, and every time I've gone up there in the past, it usually leaves me feeling drained and exhausted. I'm really glad I work downtown as opposed to Capitol Hill. D.C. - and politics in general - seems to attract a certain breed. Much in the same way showbiz in Los Angeles attracts certain types and mentalities. I'm not saying it's purely good or bad - just that both cities seem to be filled with certain personalities. And I can personally only take so much "type A."
As I've heard before "D.C. is like L.A. for ugly people."
Discuss!

Who's That Adam?

While I'm on an 80's Madonna kick...

Favorite line "She trouble, in a word, get closer to the fire..."

La Isla Bonita

Sorry I haven't updated much - got lots of sun over the weekend, that's about it. We made it halfway to Rehoboth before we had to stop in some scary redneck town - Sean's car was having some, shall we say, technical difficulties. So scary auto shop in nowhereville Eastern Shore was no help, and we both figured we'd best turn back before we got stuck in a cornfield. (Drunky - you can put down that "Black Magic for Dummies") The weekend wasn't totally ruined; we hung out by the pool at both his place and mine, so that was nice.

And in beach-related news, Sean and I are taking a much-needed getaway at the end of next month to the Caribbean. So here's Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" to get us in that mood...
I so envision myself dancing around in that red flamenco dress. "Last night I dreamed of San Pedro...It all seems like yesterday not far away..."

The Age of Silver Foxes

The much-anticipated Advocate issue is out featuring my husband Anderson Cooper on the cover. And the main article is all about "silver foxes."

"I had seen silver foxes before, of course, and even counted some of them as friends, but this guy was different: He was stunning -- lean, attractive, skin unblemished. With his stylish clothes, Ferragamo shoes, and palpable sense of ease, he was a paragon of desirability -- and his thick gray hair only upped the sexy quotient. I wanted to sleep with him, date him, have his kids. And it was all the more enchanting considering this was in Chelsea in New York City, where the average gay guy still sports cargo pants and a fake tan. This man -- and he was definitely a man -- made the other guys look like mere boys.

Sure enough, I started to see silver foxes like him everywhere, these smoking-hot guys with toned torsos, obvious confidence, and insouciant hair, who weren’t decades older than me but only a few years. Wherever I was -- on Seventh Avenue, in my Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, or on business trips -- they seemed to flaunt their silver hair and masculinity as if they hadn’t a care in the world. I was beguiled. Now I couldn’t wait to go gray. I wanted to be a silver fox -- and to date one"

Barely Regal

Prince Harry. Just because I felt like it.

Reho...what?

So while persuing options for the weekend, I came across a high-larious add for “Rehobus.” It’s a bus that takes gay people to Rehoboth Beach. I can only imagine it’s like those cheap Chinatown death-mobiles that go to New York City, only for cheap queens who can't afford to drive.
And not just any queens. Oh no, it gets better. It's apparently is run by Daddy Complex Duplex Diner.
Oh Joy – imagine being on a bus full of those queens. It’s like my friend P says: “Power gays? More like power bottoms!”
(I swear, P, you need to trademark that phrase.)

Take Me on a Roller Coaster...

So Sean has the whole weekend off away from the kitchen - a rarity! So I'm trying to think of what to do for a weekend getaway. Drive to Rehoboth? The mountains? Anyone have any good / interesting ideas?

I love this song, and the video even more - wealthy older men, Vegas, bathing in cash and pearls...

I went a little crazy in the bookstore yesterday. I was looking for a book in the travel section on my lunch hour and got waylayed by the cookbooks. I bought 6. But they were on sale! Anyway, one of them was a Scandinavian cookbook, and I was possessed by a weird craving for Swedish meatballs.
So today I worked from home. I honestly had a weird ache - plus it's in my union contract I can work from home, so I took advantage of it. So anyway I made them and they were hella good, way better than anything at IKEA! Of course I've made a few personal twists to my recipe...

Ädäm's Swedish Meatballs

1.25 pounds ground beef
large pinch nutmeg
large pinch allspice
large pinch ground ginger
large pinch dried parsley
1 tsp garlic powder
1 cup water (or milk)
1 egg, beaten
oil
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
2 cups beef stock
3 tbsp heavy cream
1 small container fresh portobella mushrooms
salt, fresh ground black pepper
Serve with: egg noodles, lingonberry jam

Put the ground beef in a bowl and mix with nutmeg, allspice, parlsey, garlic, salt & pepper to taste and mix with your hands. Add water (or milk) a little at a time, then slowly add egg. Shape into little balls.
Heat oil in pan, and fry meatballs until cooked, let aside. Melt butter in pan, and then slowly add flour. Slowly add stockto form a smooth sauce. Add mushrooms and ginger and bring sauce to a boil, and let the sauce thicken a little. Add cream and mix in; then add meatballs and simmer for 5-10 mins. Serve over egg noodles with lingonberry jam on side.

I Know Who Enabled Drunky

I still haven't watched/had the time to waste on Lindsay Lohan's last movie, "I Know Who Killed Me." I had a friend who watched it and told me that all the shiteous reviews didn't do it justice; it's so bad it's almost good. Hey, she won a Razzie for "Worst Actress."
For laughs, do read this in-depth review of it. Now I kinda want to see it.

Sk8r Boi Man?

Ok - has anyone else noticed the apparent trend of guys who looks over 25 riding around on skateboards?!?
Yes, grown men, seriously commuting around on skateboards. I had a skateboard once... when I was 15. Sean and I have seen so many men who are way too old to be on skateboards lately. It's enough to make even Avril Levine sick. Guys: it's called accepting age with dignity.

One trend I do like is the seeming resurgence of fedoras. Those close to me know my fetish for hats (Sean still harasses me when I buy one - "Adam how many hats do you have already?!") So of course I have a few fedoras added to my summer collection. No skateboards though LOL.

I had fun last night at Halo with F and my friend Kim and her girlfriend who's in town from London. Yummy black cherry cosmos, which I totally stole the recipe from Halo to make on my own. I begrudgingly admit that Cobalt makes a good passion fruit cosmo, too. It's all in the vodka!

Someone We Know in 20 5 years

Yesterday my friend P was blogging about a handsome Russian billionaire, and I saw this news story from Russia...

I swear if you replace "Russia" with "Washington" and "wife" with "boyfriend" you'll have a dark vision of a certain someone's future...

Wife Kills Drunk Husband With Folding Couch

ST PETERSBURG (Reuters) - A Russian woman in St Petersburg killed her drunk husband with a folding couch, Russian media reported on Wednesday.
St Petersburg's Channel Five said the man's wife, upset with her husband for being drunk and refusing to get up, kicked a handle after an argument, activating a mechanism that folds the couch up against a wall.

soju, so good

"The trouble with America is that there are far too many wide, open spaces surrounded by teeth." -Charles Luckman.

And that, I think is fitting for the 4th of July. This year seemed especially anti-climactic for me. I'm not sure why, but I was very sleepy all weekend. Sean was off Friday and Sunday, and aside from some Soho and Halo, we really didn't go out much. We would have gone out Saturday night, but we got caught in a downpour and go soaked. Actually, it was kinda romantic; I had fun getting wet.
For some reason Sean and I got on this Korean kick after we had dinner at Mandu (which means "dumpling" in Korean) on 18th St near Lauriol Plaza. It actually used to be a Nepalese/Tibetan place called Everest - Margo and I ate there once. While I liked their soju (rice wine) menu, having visited Korea, I felt the food was definitely "Americanized" for Western tastes. For real Korean food you have to go to Annandale, which we did on Sunday. Sorak Garden is consistently good. And then we went to Lotte, the Asian grocery on Fairfax Circle that I love going to. If it's Asian and it's edible, they have it! Oh, and Sean and I went to a hookah bar. That's about my weekend - it was good to just relax. By th way - I still haven't grabbed a copy of The Advocate with Andy on the cover (see below). It's so going on my wall... no I'm not 14 years old.

Happy Canada Day!

Happy Canada Day to my friends in the north (in what may one day be my home). Cute hockey players, maple syrup, gay marriage, polar bears... what's not to love?

So here's some Canada Day pride with Shawn Ashmore for you all. Oh Canada!

Not Only Can He Cook...

Random thought: Men who are good with kids are hot.

It occurred to me after watching my boyfriend around kids; he's very good with children and kids like him. I think he's make a great dad one day.

Men with kids: Discuss!

Fire Away!

First off, Happy Birthday, Margo!

Switching gears, I realize what I’m about to write will probably piss off a good chunk of my friends. In fact, the topic lead to the first political argument er, discussion I’ve had with my boyfriend.

I’ve tried to steer away from politics and keep things light on here. I haven’t even written anything about the California marriage equality ruling… I plan n getting around to my thoughts on that soon. But yesterday I was very happy when I read that the Supreme Court had overturned the District of Columbia’s ban on handgun ownership.

There, I said it. I am pro-gun ownership. I think self-defense is a right, not a privilege, and in violent times I think it’s batshit crazy to tell people they can’t defend their homes when criminals are mugging/shooting/raping/gay-bashing people.

Ok, now I’m waiting for the text messages of horror from my friends. And no Margo, I didn’t buy you a gun for your birthday : ) But if you want…

Best wishes to the witches

Oh gosh – I forgot to wish a) My friend F a great first day at his new job, and b) by friend P good luck at his deposition today!!

I love the term “deposition,” it sounds so dramatic! Last time I heard it was when Britney has fighting to get custody of her kids… which is so me in a few years when I’m in court fighting for my two out-of-wedlock kids. Anderson Cooper or Tom Brady could be the father, I’m not really sure. I’ll have to go on Maury or Jeremy Kyle to find out.

Murder on the Dancefloor

I actually don't have much for you today, so I'll leave you with some music. Sean is not feeling good today, so get well soon, baby!

The Ostrich or the Egg

So dinner last night was amazing – Sean made an Asian chicken dish in a spicy sauce that was very good. It’s nice having someone cook for you (who knows how to cook) and all I had to do was set the music and chill the sake.

So while shopping for ingredients at the Whole Foods on Leesburg Pike near Sean’s, it seems that location carries ostrich eggs in their produce dept. Yes, ostrich eggs. If you’ve never seen one, they’re almost the size of a soccer ball. I was thinking, first, I had no idea their was such a demand for ostrich products. How do they taste? And my god, how many omelets could one make from one?

Has anyone actually used one before??

More on DC "Power Gays"

I had to laugh - I think P & F will get this... in fact, P, did you write this one?

From today's Washington Blade "Bitch Session" section...

"Why do realtors find it necessary to put their faces in their ads? Are they selling more than real estate?"

"I Know We're Cool..."

First, I want to wish congratulations to Fernando on his new job!!! Also, Happy Birthday (a week early, I know!) to Margo!! I’m looking forward to the celebrations!

I don’t have much else, except I’m glad the weekend is here. I’ve been very lucky and the last month has been all 4-day weeks. It’ll be hard to have an actual 5-day week! Sean and I are looking to take some time off this summer, actually, to go on vacation. Not sure exactly what yet, but we both agree another tropical beach type thing is in order. In the meantime, I’ll have to “settle” for the margaritas at Banana Café.

This song is dedicated to Stephen. He’s sort of the Anti-Drunky McDrunkerson when I think about it....

Have a Nice Trip, See You Next Fall...

So today while grabbing lunch I saw this lady trip and fall. She tripped on nothing but air, too, which makes it funnier. And I don’t mean just stumble, I mean she full-on ate concrete!

Ok, so maybe I had to laugh a little. The point is embarrassing as it is, the same thing happened to me several weeks ago. I was walking around one evening and found myself falling head over heels (though fortunately I caught myself before I ate sidewalk).

To make matters worse a guy came up to help me…and he was an attractive older man! I wanted to die! I thought he was straight until… in my humiliation I was trying to scramble away after a brief thank-you, but he stopped me to say: “You should fall more often, it makes a cute guy like you more approachable.”

By this point I’m sure I was blushing. But as you probably know, flattery will get you everywhere with me. The man kept trying to chat with me before I made some lame excuse about having to be somewhere. The point is:

a) Why does this only happen to me when I’m in a relationship!! Mr. handsome older man where were you two years ago when I slipped on ice?
b) Lesson for all of us: though your backside an egos may be bruised, next time you want to grab someone’s attention, try falling! Apparently it makes you approachable!

Don't Drink and Dive!

Seriously! After a weekend of not-so-wisely taking late-night drunken swims (and playing in that giant rubber ball - pics forthcoming) my body looks beat to hell. I still have bruises and cuts all over me! Drinking + swimming +rough/sharp objects = disaster! I'm surprised we didn't drown LOL.

Leaving Las Vegas Salt Lake...

Well you know when I arrived this afternoon on the flight back from Salt lake with F - we were greeted (of course) by a massive thunderstorm. What is it lately?

So the SLC was fun - it's always great to stay at the "Manoir du Verger" - thanks for everything, B. I have some pictures from the dinner event I'll upload later. It was nice just to spend a few days, aside from the dinner, just drinking black cherry cosmos and sitting by the pool (I've gotten some great color), or riding around in the Bently singing along to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" :)

Shit, now it's stuck in my head... "I don't know what to do, I'm always in the dark...."

Anyway, I'll leave you with some summer recommends:
Books:
"In the Country of Last Things" by Paul Auster - I read this on the trip, and really enjoyed it, though it's a bit depressing - not light summer reading.
"The Magus" by John Fowles - One of my favorite novels. I re-read it every few years because as I grow older, I discover more truths that I couldn't understand when I was younger.
Movies:
"The Strangers" - I saw this with P & F, and I think they can attest that I'm sure my nails left permanent impressions on the armrests. I like some horror movies - this one is worth a watch. Favorite line: "Because you were home..."
Music:
I actually need some new stuff for my iPod - what's good that's out and new?

Happy Pride 2008

Last time I was in Utah, whole swaths of mountainsides erupted in wildfires. I can’t wait to see what will happen this time! This evening I’m off to Salt Lake City for four days, and I realize I will be missing DC’s Pride Festival.

I’ve been to pretty much every Capital Pride since 2001, and I honestly think if you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all. I still love going, no doubt, when I am in town. But every year you see the same prehistoric fossils you see any other time at JR’s

Anyway, hAAppy Pride to everyone!!

Blind Item - 06/09/08

Oh the things you come across reading political articles on Google News...

Which person was profiled in a hometown paper recently for his work here in the big city of Washington? They must be so proud...

(as one friend said to me today, the reporter forgot to add "that he was a raging alcoholic that [tried to] hit his boyfriend and enjoyed blackouts regularly....)

Editor, Edit Thy Self

You know going back through posts I realize I should use Spell Check more often; my posts sometimes have the garbled spelling and grammar of Courtney Love's Myspace blog (which is you haven't read you must! - I use the word "read" loosely because unless you're fluent in Crack no one can make sense of it.)

SPF 100

Staying indoors today has been, as has having air conditioning in the car! Sean and I did what any sensible person would do today when it's 100 outside- we went shopping! I got lots of cute new summer stuff. You know, I do feel a bit bad for Sean, I know shopping with me can not be fun for other person. It's probably very similar to how straight men feel shopping with their girlfriends. You know what I'm talking about, that bored stiff guy waiting by the dressing room, holding a purse and staring at his toes. Fortunately where we went there were lots of cooking-related stores, so being the chef that he is, there were stores to occupy him why I dealt with more important issues like shoes.

We put of "Sex and the City" because Margo's not feeling well - get well soon!! Last night I hung out with my friend from Richmond, Laura, and two of her friends who were in town for the night. Besides getting walloped with a flash storm that came out of nowhere, we had fun.

Oh, and I have to laugh - I was reading P's blog, and he mentioned a quote that referred to my hometown as "a faded seaside resort." Now being a native son of Virginia Bitch Beach I can attest that it is quite faded. And when VB isn't persecuting witches (no, not me, I'm referring to my predecessor the locally-famous Witch of Pungo) it is home to trashy people, who I won't name here, but one of whom tried to fuck with one of my best friends, a fellow witch. Say, didn't they have really bad tornadoes recently? LOL

"So I Got My Cappuccino to Go..."

Saturdays in the park...Or maybe not...it's hot as hell here this weekend. I have a friend from Richmond in town this evening, so I may hang out with her. Last night I went to Halo for the first time in awhile with F. I ran into Stephen and we ended up going to a few more bars together. It's funny to see him out considering when we dated he was such a hermit, and now he's all over the place. We got some much-needed food, too. I had a fun Friday. Oh, and tomorrow I am finally going to see Sex in the City with Sean and Margo :)

Hmm, I think that's all I have today, so I'll leave with some music. Everytime I hear/read something from Girls Aloud I think of Phillip, so here goes...

The Converging of Storms

So, I’m looking forward to a weekend at home this weekend. Boston was fun – Tom Brady is like god there - his face is all over the place. It's a good thing I left Sean at home. And I got that eerie feeling when I hit the gay clubs, as I was in Drunky McDrunkerson’s home turf. It was like some disturbance in the Force, complete with rain and lighting lol. Next week I’m traveling with the other “witches” to Utah, which I’m looking forward to.

I found out I’m getting my stimulus check from the IRS, which needs to hurry and get here. It’s the only good thing Bush has done in 8 years, but talk about a day late and $600 short. And I know what my friend P thinks about Obama getting the nomination. Personally, I think I’ve become so turned-off by things (and I realize it’s rather self-indulgent) that I don’t really care which Dem. runs, just so long as they win. Either way, Obama/Hillary (let’s call them Obillary) are afraid to touch the “M” word. Instead they dance around marriage equality by saying “civil unions” or “domestic partnerships” etc. So basically I’m still looking at Canada or the UK for sooner-than-later emigration.

Things are looking up and up for Sean. I won’t jinx things but he has some great new opportunities I don’t think he’s interested in the LA chefing job, though, so you all won’t be losing us to SoCal. My friend M is of to SoCal, actually – safe travels M and I will keep posting McDreamy for you on Wednesdays!

Blind Item

Which former employer did I see yesterday? Not only did she not try to run me over (as I imagined she would – let’s just say we were not on good terms) she pulled over to talk to me! She told me I looked great (duh!) blah blah blah, glad to hear things are going well. Of course I immediately called the other two “witches.”

Maybe she thinks we’re on good terms again? Hold on dear, let me put another knife in your back. Smile and say cheese! LOL

Back from Bah-ston

Back from a weekend in Boston - I was there for the True Colors tour. I'm too tired to write much about it right now, but it was a lot of fun - saw Cyndi Lauper, the B-52's, Regina Spektor and a few others acts I can't really remember. Saw all the touristy stuff by day and even got to see a little nightlife. I just can't get past those accents - can you imagine being in bed with someone who talks like that. There's very little sexy about the Boston accent ::cringe::

Nobody Puts Adam in a Corner!

First Sean told me he had never seen "The Little Mermaid." Now he tells me he has never seen "Dirty Dancing?"

As a gay man, I have to ask, was Sean in a coma through the whole 80's?!?! I will have to rectify this situation soon with a movie night. You know you know the whole soundtrack, readers, don't act like you don't!
"She's like the wind..."
"Now I've had the time of My Life..."
"Hungry Eyes..."

McDreamy Time!

Because it's my blog and I can! (I'm dedicating this to Margo)

If "Dr. McDreamy" doesn't ease your "hump day" you have no pulse.

Living Lohan

You know, I always used to think that, scandal-wise, Lindsay Lohan was a poor man's Paris Hilton.

Who would have thought she (and by extension her crazy fame-whore family) could be so interesting?!

So is she a lesbian or not? Is she dating Freddie Krueger's lesbian kid sister (AKA Samantha Ronson)?

And am I a bad person for wanting to watch "Living Lohan?" - I feel like I know I should know better.

Love, Love Will Keep Us Together...

Since things have been going so well again lately between Sean and I, I felt like posting this...

Sigh. And remember, I will only accept pay in Euros.

Tuesday Afternoon

Well, first a hat-tip to Phillip who's over in the UK right now for the extra publicity for my blog :)
I hope everyone had a hAApy Memorial Day weekend! It was much-needed on my part. I had planned on going away for the weekend, but Sean and I have been spending some quality time together that we desperately needed. it was his first night off in over 2 weeks.
By "quality time" that means we were lazy, napped in the park, ate, went furniture shopping (I realized I had a new desktop but no desk to put it on!). We sound like a boring old lesbian couple, I realize.
I went out a few of the nights, I visited my family on Sunday. I went to a Memorial Day get together at my friend Ozzy's place yesterday.
Other than that Sean and I are planning vacation. I'm actually on the phone with him right now - we're discussing the idea of moving to Los Angeles together, he got a job offer there. Don't worry we're not planning on moving yet, though I do like L.A.

"Indiana Jones and the Curse of the DC Witches!"

The title I think would make a good screenplay - action, adventure, and our enemies respectively getting Bell's Palsy, alcoholism, or being forced to turn tricks.
(I wonder what someone who stumbles on this blog might think of all the inside references LOL)

So I saw the new movie last night. I won't put any spoilers here. I will say if you liked the first three, it's worth going to see. I think Sean, Margo and myself can agree the ending was a little far-fetched. I don't know, somehow I expected better, but it wasn't bad.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

iAdam

Tonight I’m going with Sean and Margo to see the new Indiana Jones movie, which I’m excited about.
I also have to add I took a leap and bought a new computer. My new iMac will be delivered shortly and I’m can't wait to get it! I should've just gone to the Apple Store and bought it on-site, but I wanted some special add-ons, so I ordered it online.

"I love the male body. It's better designed than the male mind." - Andrea Newman.

So, things seem to be healed/healing between Sean and I. There was definitely some miscommunication. What I do appreciate is that (unlike some past relationships) we can talk through our problems in a mature way. So I am feeling much better about things this morning.

Crack the Whip!

Holy Photoshop! I don't know how they do it, but even though Harrison Ford is like 4 zillion years old, he's still a hot hot man. Maybe it's the fedora, I don't know. I am looking forward to seeing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull this weekend!

I don't know about that Shia LeBoeuf kid, though. He could be hot, when he's not getting arrested at Walgreens. ha!

In my continuing series "Ex and the City" - today I had lunch with "S" (last week I had lunch with Casey) and it was really nice. I guess not much to report, but it's great being able to be his friend and have lunch together.

I admit in my personal life I've been sketchy with the details surrounding things between Sean and I, which I think we are trying to work on. In fact I'm meeting him in about 20 mins to have dinner and talk. Maybe I'll feel like writing about it in more serious detail later. Right now it's kinda hard to put into words. I am hopeful.

Trend Graveyard : Jorts!

I know this post seems out of place given my mood lately, but after a walk through Dupont Circle today, I feel compelled as a public service to denounce a clothing article that should be dead and buried with the 80's and 90's : jean shorts AKA "jorts."

What's even worse is I have seen young gay men wearing them!! Really, we are supposed to be the paragon of style. Even I have my "off days" but I have never sunk so low as to wear jean shorts. People, stop this travesty already.

I suppose "daisy dukes" are OK for trailer park women, but no man in his right mind should wear jean shorts. No. Put them in the trash. Don't even donate them to the homeless. There is nothing sexy or appealing about a man in jean shorts. The only thing that complements jean shorts are mullets and beer-hats. Don't be that guy.

Moving On?

I haven't really updated in a few days, haven't really felt like it. I'm having some relationship issues you might say. I'm really not sure what will happen; can things be worked out and differences resolved. I'm not sure. I'll post more soon.

Declined!

A hat-tip to my friend who posted a blind item about a certain "power gay" having his card declined at the bar the other night. Wa-wa-waaaa. I love it when people puff themselves up only to look more foolish - what's that saying, oh yes, "pride cometh before the fall." Indeed!

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

London Calling?

Well I think Sean felt my vibes all the way in McLean, not an hour after yesterday's post (which should have been more properly titled "I'm not mad at you - I'm mad at your schedule!") I got an absolutely beautiful bouquet of flowers. And now I feel slightly bad for being angry with him.

I have a deadline tonight to make a decision about my upcoming Mem. Day weekend - I may be in London, I may in Boston, I may in Rehoboth... where will Adam be?! (Of course I'm leaning towards London, but I have other expen$e$ to con$ider this summer).
